How to Build a Redwood Planter Box

This is a simple project that can be made in one day. The only machines required are a table saw and a band saw. This planter box could be set on a patio or it could be hung using small decorative chains. Its unique design would add interest to any outdoor location. Redwood, if treated, will retain its color and add beauty to your flowers and vegetables for years to come.

A. Materials List:

B. Cutting Procedures:
- This project will require a ¾” x 7” x 10’ select redwood board.
- Use a radial arm saw to cut eight 12 13/16” lengths from the board
- Use a table saw to rip four 1 ½” wide pieces from each of the 12 13/16” lengths.
- Use a taper jig with the table saw to cut the tapers required for each side (A).
- The sides (A) also must beveled 84 degrees.
- Both edges of each side (A) must be tapered and beveled.
- To determine the taper use the following formula:
- Place the taper jig against the fence and place one of the sides (A) against the
taper jig. At the closest end of the side (A) mark the taper jig. From that mark measure 12” on the taper jig and make a second mark. Open the taper jig and measure .351” at the second mark, then tighten the jig. This will provide the proper taper needed.
- Tilt the saw blade to 84 degrees and rip a bevel on the side (A). Turn the board over and bevel the other side. Repeat the same taper and bevel cuts for the other 31 sides. NOTE: The taper and bevel should be cut at the same time.
- Draw an 8” diameter circle on the remainder of the red wood board.
- Adjust the jig saw table to 21 degree and cut the bottom (B) to 8” diameter.This 8” diameter board cut at a 21 degree taper should fit snuggly at the bottom of the planter box.
- To make the metal band (C) for the planter box use a 1/8” diameter copper wire 53 3/8” long. This will make a 17” diameter band.
Formula: C = pi x d or (C = 3.14 x 17” = 53.38”)
- Braze weld the ends of the wire together. First grind the ends of the wire to a slight taper on a grinding wheel. Next braze the ends together using an oxy-acetylene torch and a filler rod. Clean up any excess filler metal with a hand grinder.
NOTE: If a welder is not available, metal bands may be available at a local hardwood store. As a last resort, a welding shop should be able to make a band without difficulty.
C. Sanding Procedures:
- Rough sand all wood by hand using 80 grit sand paper.
- Finish sand all wood by hand using 120 grit sand paper.
D. Assembly Procedures
- Place waterproof glue on the edges of the bottom (B). Use a nail gun and 1 ½” nails to secure the sides (A) to the bottom (B). NOTE: Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is an excellent glue for this project. Also it cleans up with water.
- Turn the planter box up-side-down and tap the band (C) snuggly in place. Use staples to hold the band in place.
E: Finish Procedures:
- Hand sand all edges with 120 grit sandpaper.
- If stain is desired, apply with a brush and allow to penetrate 5-10 minutes, and then remove excess with a clean rag.
- Allow stain to dry and then repeat with a second coat.
- Apply a spar varnish coat using a bristle brush. Allow to dry over night.
- Lightly hand sand finish with 220 grit sandpaper.
- Apply a second coat of finish.
- If additional finish coats are desired, repeat steps #4 & 5.
- Allow 24 hours for the finish to dry
NOTE: The durability of an exterior finish is limited due to the exposure of sun and moisture. One might prefer to apply semi transparent stain and a water repellent preservative. These may give a longer service life.
